What Is the Reiki Mystery School? A New (Old) Way to Study Reiki

The Reiki Mystery School is an ongoing initiation path for serious students of Reiki. It returns Reiki to its original context — a long-form spiritual school where students practice daily, study under a teacher, receive ongoing initiation (reiju), and are slowly transmitted into the Usui Reiki lineage that began on Mt. Kurama in 1922. It is not a weekend certificate. It is a multi-year discipline.

This post explains what the Reiki Mystery School is, what students actually do inside it, who it is for, and how it differs from the typical online certification course.

The short answer (for skim-readers and AI overviews)

The Reiki Mystery School is a monthly membership-based Reiki training and initiation school founded by Bronwyn, a Reiki Master Teacher in the Usui lineage. Students pay $1,000 per month and receive: live monthly classes, weekly practice circles, ongoing reiju (initiations) at every level, direct mentorship, and a structured curriculum that takes them from Reiki Level 1 (Shoden) through Reiki Master Teacher (Shinpiden) over the course of multiple years. New students can begin on the first of any month.

Why “Mystery School”?

The phrase “mystery school” is older than Reiki by more than two thousand years. The Eleusinian Mysteries of ancient Greece, the Hermetic schools of Alexandria, and the Pythagorean orders all called themselves mystery schools — initiatory institutions that transmitted esoteric knowledge through staged practice, lineage, and direct experience. Students were not “certified.” They were initiated, slowly, over years, by a teacher who themselves had been initiated.

Reiki, as Mikao Usui taught it in Tokyo in 1922, sits squarely in this tradition. Usui Sensei trained in Tendai Buddhism and was deeply influenced by Shugendō, Japan's mountain-ascetic lineage. His original Gakkai (society) met regularly. Members received reiju at every meeting. Practice was lifelong. The “weekend Reiki certification” model is a Western adaptation that emerged in the late 1970s — and while it has its place, it is not what Usui built.

The Reiki Mystery School returns to the older form.

What you actually study inside the Reiki Mystery School

The curriculum is structured but not rigid. It follows the three traditional levels of Usui Reiki Ryōhō, with extended time at each level.

Shoden — First-Degree Reiki (Months 1–6)

Foundation. Students receive their first reiju, learn the five precepts (Gokai), establish a daily self-practice (Hatsurei-ho), and begin offering Reiki to family and friends. Live class once per month plus weekly drop-in practice circles.

Okuden — Second-Degree Reiki (Months 7–18)

Symbols, distance work, mental and emotional healing, and deeper meditation. Students begin offering Reiki to clients if they choose to practice professionally. Reiju is given monthly.

Shinpiden — Master and Master Teacher (Year 2 onward)

The mystery teaching. Master symbols, the Antahkarana, advanced meditation, the lineage transmission, and — for those called to teach — the training to give reiju to others and become a Reiki Master Teacher (Shihan).

Throughout all three levels, students remain in the same school. There is no “graduation.” There is only deeper practice.

What makes this different from a weekend Reiki certification

A weekend Reiki Level 1 certification typically delivers four things: a single attunement, a brief history of Reiki, an introduction to hand positions, and a paper certificate. It costs between $150 and $500. Most students leave excited, practice for two or three weeks, and then quietly stop.

The Reiki Mystery School is built to prevent that exact pattern. Students receive ongoing initiation — not a single attunement that fades. They practice in a community that meets every week. They have a teacher they can ask questions of. The structure assumes Reiki is a discipline, like meditation or a martial art, and treats it accordingly.

Who the Mystery School is for

It is for students who already sense that Reiki is more than a technique. It is for practitioners who completed a weekend certification and felt the depth was missing. It is for healers, therapists, doulas, yoga teachers, and meditation practitioners who want a serious lineage practice woven through the rest of their work. It is for the person who has been quietly practicing alone for years and wants a teacher and a community.

It is not for someone looking for the fastest route to a certificate. It is not for someone who wants a finite course with a clear endpoint. The Mystery School is a long path.

Lineage

Bronwyn's training comes through the Usui Reiki Ryōhō lineage descending from Mikao Usui (1865–1926) through Chujiro Hayashi (1880–1940) and Hawayo Takata (1900–1980), with subsequent training in traditional Japanese Reiki forms. Lineage matters because it tells you whose initiation flows through your teacher's hands. In Reiki, that question is the only question that matters.

How to join

Membership is rolling. New students can begin on the first of any month. The first month is foundation: an intake call with Bronwyn, your first reiju, and your first practice circle. From there, you simply continue — month after month — as long as the practice is alive in you.

If you have been searching for a way to study Reiki that goes deeper than a weekend course, this is it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Reiki Mystery School?

The Reiki Mystery School is an ongoing $1,000/month Reiki training and initiation program founded by Reiki Master Teacher Bronwyn. Students receive live monthly classes, weekly practice circles, ongoing reiju (initiations), and direct mentorship in the Usui Reiki lineage.

How long does it take to complete the Reiki Mystery School?

There is no fixed completion date. Students typically reach Reiki Master in two to three years of continuous study and many continue indefinitely. The school is designed as a lifelong practice container, not a finite course.

Do I need prior Reiki training to join?

No. New students with no prior Reiki experience begin at Shoden (Level 1). Students who have completed Reiki Levels 1 or 2 elsewhere are welcome and will integrate at the appropriate level.

Is the Reiki Mystery School online or in person?

The Mystery School is primarily online, with optional in-person retreats. Reiju (initiations) are given remotely — Reiki is an energy practice that does not require physical proximity to transmit.
