Reiki Attunement: What It Is and What Actually Happens

A Reiki attunement is the process by which a teacher opens and amplifies the Reiki already moving through you. As I put it in The Reiki Handbook: a Reiki attunement, or training, amplifies already existing Reiki — it opens energetic channels to allow a clearer, stronger flow. It is not a gate you have to pass through before you're allowed to heal. The capacity is already in you. The attunement makes it stronger, clearer, and teaches you the formal language of the lineage.

The ability comes from the attunement, not from exercises
This is the part that surprises people. You don't build Reiki the way you build a muscle, through drills and repetition. The ability comes from an attunement, not from exercises. Reiki is part of a lineage — it's passed from teacher to student, the way it has been since Mikao Usui. The attunement is the moment of that transmission. After it, you don't have to try to channel Reiki. You simply are a channel.
What actually happens during an attunement
During a Reiki attunement, the energy channels open. In the body's terms, different chakras open up, allowing you to channel life force energy for healing — and that opening deepens your sensitivity and your connection through touch. People often feel warmth, tingling, emotion, a settling, or simply a quiet sense that something has shifted. There's no single correct experience.
The cleansing that follows
An attunement isn't only an opening — it's also a clearing. During Reiki attunements we experience a cleansing process, where outgrown mental and emotional patterns come up for healing. Old habits and stuck places can surface in the days afterward, asking to be felt and released. Many lineages name a window of integration after attunement (often around three weeks) for exactly this reason — give yourself gentleness while it settles.
Once attuned, always attuned
You only need to be attuned to a given level once. Once you are attuned to Reiki, you stay attuned for the rest of your life. After the attunement process is complete, you are a conduit, and Reiki quietly becomes part of you. Even if you don't practice for years, it remains.
So do you need an attunement?
Reiki lives in everyone and everything to some degree. So the honest answer is layered: you don't need anyone's permission to bring caring, healing presence to yourself or someone you love — that's your birthright. What the attunement does is amplify the Reiki already in you and hand you the formal language and lineage of the practice. It's an inheritance and an intensifier, not a wall between you and your own healing.
Frequently asked questions
What is a Reiki attunement? It's the process by which a teacher opens and amplifies the Reiki already flowing through you, and connects you to the lineage. The ability comes from the attunement itself, not from exercises.
What does an attunement feel like? It varies. Many people feel warmth, tingling, emotion, or a deep settling as the chakras open; others feel something quieter. There's no single correct experience — it works either way.
Do I have to be attuned to practice Reiki? Reiki already lives in everyone to some degree, so you don't need permission to offer healing presence. The attunement amplifies that existing Reiki and teaches you the formal practice — it's an amplifier and a tradition, not a gate.
Does a Reiki attunement wear off? No. Once you're attuned, you stay attuned for life. After the process is complete you're a conduit, and even years without practice won't close the channel.
