There is no special animal technique to master first. The real art is consent: offering the Reiki, and then letting the animal lead.

Animals aren't that different from us

The energy that organizes a human body organizes an animal's body too. In the Asian medicine I practice, the same correspondences hold. So you are not learning a different kind of Reiki for your dog. You are doing the same thing you would do for a person, with the same hands and the same heart, just paying closer attention to a body that speaks a different language.

Animals consent with their bodies

We tend to worry, how do I get an animal's consent? But animals are actually the easy case. Cats and dogs are easy, I tell my students, because they'll just get up and walk away. They don't perform politeness. When they're done, they're done, and they leave. Let the animal's body be the consent. Leaning in is a yes. Getting up and going is a no, and it's a complete sentence.

If you want a practice for it: first, ask whether they'd like to receive the Reiki. If you get a clear no, you stop. If you get a yes, stay humble about it. And here is the key move that keeps the whole thing clean: if they don't want it, send it to the earth. You simply ask the Reiki to redirect to the earth if the recipient does not want to receive it. Nothing is ever imposed.

How to actually share Reiki with your dog

• Settle yourself first. Get grounded before you begin.

• Offer, don't impose. Let your hands rest near them, not pinning them. Let them come and go.

• Watch the body and follow it. Leaning in, softening, sighing — that's a yes. Wandering off — that's enough for today.

• You don't have to touch. If your animal won't hold still, or they're at the vet or across the house, Reiki can be sent across distance using a stand-in held in mind as that specific animal.

Reiki alongside care, not instead of it

One honest note: Reiki sits alongside good veterinary care, it doesn't replace it. If something is wrong, your vet comes first. Reiki is the presence you bring to a creature you love.
