Reiki and the Chakras: How They Actually Relate

Here's something most articles won't tell you: Reiki and the chakra system are not the same tradition. As I teach it, Reiki — as it was handed down from Dr. Mikao Usui — doesn't actually rely on the chakras, or even reference them. The chakras come from the yogic and Ayurvedic traditions of India. They were folded into Western Reiki later, by teachers seeking more wisdom, because the chakra map explains the flow of energy so beautifully that it was only natural to bring it in. So when people pair Reiki with the chakras, they're combining two compatible systems — not describing one.

What the chakras actually are

In their own tradition, the chakras are centers of a subtle vital force — in Sanskrit, sukshma prana, subtle prana. They're often described with organ correspondences and physical locations, but focusing on them as physical things misses the point: they represent less dense forms of qi than the body's denser energy. What the chakras give us is a map of flow. They explain the pathway energy takes as it moves through the body. The universal life force follows these pathways — and it does so when you use Reiki, too. So clearing the chakras helps the energy move freely, which deepens your connection to the source.

Why Reiki and the chakras work so well together

Even though classical Usui Reiki didn't use the chakras, the two fit naturally — because both are really describing the same thing: the movement of life force. Reiki channels that life force; the chakra map shows you where it tends to pool, block, and flow. There's a beautiful resonance with the meridian traditions, too. Reiki has traditionally been understood as energy channeled from above, through the crown of the head, gathering in the heart, and flowing out through the minor energy centers in the palms — the same palms you lay on the body.

You don't have to work with the chakras to practice Reiki — the energy has its own intelligence and goes where it's needed regardless. But the chakra map can be a helpful lens. As you give Reiki, you might notice where the energy feels stuck or abundant, and the chakra system gives you a vocabulary for that. Think of it as an enhancement and a language, not a requirement.
