What Is Somatic Movement? A Simple Guide to Embodiment

Somatic movement is a way of moving that pays attention to how your body feels from the inside rather than how it looks from the outside. You move slowly, following sensation instead of counting reps. Your nervous system settles. Tension you’ve carried for years starts to let go. Embodiment is the larger word for where this leads — being present in your body, and letting it lead.

I’ve spent nearly three decades as an acupuncturist with my hands on people’s bodies, and I’ve watched this work reach places that talking and effort never touched.

Somatic movement vs. exercise

Exercise points outward. Burn this, build that, hit the number. Somatic movement points inward: notice what you feel, then move to change how you feel. Both belong in a life. Only one of them settles your nervous system directly.

What it helps with

Stress and anxiety respond quickly — slow, sensation-led movement tells the nervous system it’s safe. Chronic tension and pain often ease, because you’re releasing a holding pattern rather than stretching against it. And if you live mostly in your head, this is the way back into your body. Emotion surfaces too, sometimes. The body keeps what the mind never got words for.

Where it comes from

Somatic movement is a wide umbrella. Somatic experiencing, Feldenkrais, contact improvisation, ecstatic dance, breathwork, and the Axis Syllabus — a research-based method of anatomically sound movement I teach — all live under it. Different forms, same root: movement as a way home.

How to begin

Small. Two minutes noticing your breath. A stretch where you follow the sensation instead of chasing the shape. One song with your eyes closed. There’s no wrong version of this. The attention is the practice.

Frequently asked questions

What is somatic movement in simple terms?

Moving slowly and attentively based on what you feel inside, to release tension and calm your nervous system.

Is somatic movement the same as somatic therapy?

No. Somatic therapy is clinical, trauma-focused mental-health work with a licensed therapist. Somatic movement is a wellness practice anyone can do.

Do I need to be flexible or a dancer?

No. There is nothing to perform.

How is embodiment different from somatic movement?

Embodiment is the destination. Somatic movement is one road there.

How often should I practice?

A few minutes daily beats an hour once a month.
