How Reiki Relieves Stress and Anxiety: 3 Simple Practices

Reiki helps with stress because it helps the body remember how to rest. When hands rest on the body with presence, breathing slows, muscles soften, and the nervous system shifts out of fight or flight and into rest and digest. That is where calm, clarity and healing can arise on their own.

I have practiced and taught Reiki since 1998, and stress is one of the most common reasons people find their way to it. Here is how it works, three practices you can try today, and what a session is like.

How stress lives in the body

Stress lives in the whole body. You may feel it as tiredness, a tight jaw or shoulders, anxiety, reactivity, poor sleep, or a sense of being disconnected from your body. From the perspective of Reiki, stress interrupts the easy flow of life force energy through you.

How Reiki helps

Reiki is universal life force energy moving through the hands, a practitioner's hands or your own. It has its own intelligence and goes where it is needed, so you do not have to direct it with your mind. Most people feel it as warmth, heaviness, or a wave of calm. Many notice they sleep better and feel steadier afterward.

Reiki works well alongside medical and psychological care.

3 simple Reiki practices you can try now

You do not need to be attuned to feel these. An attunement makes the flow clearer and stronger, but your hands already know how to do this.

1. Hand on heart, hand on belly. Place one hand on your chest and the other on your belly. Close your eyes and breathe slowly. Let each exhale be a little longer than each inhale. Stay for a few minutes.

2. Forehead rest. Rest your palm gently on your forehead and your other hand at the back of your head. Feel the warmth of your hands. This one is lovely before sleep or after a hard conversation.

3. Five-minute reset. Sit comfortably, hands resting on your thighs or over your belly. Imagine light moving down from the top of your head to your feet. With each exhale, let something heavy go.

Practiced daily, even for a few minutes, these build a calmer baseline before stress arrives. For a full head-to-feet sequence, see how to do Reiki on yourself.

What a Reiki session is like

In person, you lie down fully clothed in a quiet room while the practitioner rests their hands lightly on or just above your body. Online, the session is given at a distance. Reiki is not bound by physical space, and distance Reiki is felt much the same way. You can book a session with me or one of the Wu Wei practitioners I have trained at bronwynayla.com/sessions.

Learning Reiki for your own stress

The most lasting help is learning Reiki yourself, so you can give it to yourself any time. Reiki 1 is where that begins.

Frequently asked questions

Does Reiki help with anxiety?

Many people find that Reiki eases anxiety by helping the nervous system settle. It works alongside care from a doctor or therapist.

How quickly does Reiki relieve stress?

Many people feel calmer during a single session or a few minutes of self-practice. Practiced daily, Reiki builds a steadier baseline over time.

Can I do Reiki on myself for stress?

Yes. Resting your hands on your own body with presence is Reiki's foundation. Learning Reiki 1 makes the practice clearer and stronger.
